Yahoo News! reports that beginning January 1, 2026 that five states will no longer allow snap recipients to purchase soda, candy and other "sugary" items.
The first five states to begin this ban are Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Utah and West Virginia.
According to the USDA, U.S. Department of Agriculture -it approved 18 states with SNAP Food Restriction Waivers to take effect in year 2026.
States that will prohibit the SNAP purchase of "sugary" beverages and snacks are the following:
1. Arkansas 10. Nebraska
2. Colorado 11. North Dakota
3. Florida 12. Oklahoma
4. Hawaii 13. South Carolina
5. Idaho 14. Tennessee
6. Indiana 15. Texas
7. Iowa 16. Utah
8. Louisiana 17. Virginia
9. Missouri 18. West Virginia

For EBT (SNAP) recipients, it is vital to keep your card information secured. Be cautious to check and inspect a payment device before swiping your card. Fake payment devices can collect personal info.
